Matthew and Destiny first met in 2017 at Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, North Carolina. They were both in marching band, but it wasn’t until Matthew joined winterguard—trying something new outside of band—that their paths really started to cross. What began as a casual friendship soon turned into something more, as they grew closer during practices and late-night hangs with the rest of the guard.

Matthew’s first impression of Destiny was that she was cool, fun to be around, and genuinely kind. Destiny thought Matthew was outgoing, funny, and just as kind. Matthew made the first move, but from the beginning, it all felt easy and natural—like they were always meant to be in each other’s lives.

Their first date was simple and sweet: a laid-back trip to Chick-fil-A at Concord Commons. He got a sandwich, she got nuggets, and they sat and talked like they always did. No awkward moments, just comfort and laughter. That kind of vibe has always defined their relationship.

Destiny realized it was real when she noticed how she could completely be herself around Matthew—no pressure, no pretending. For Matthew, it was just who Destiny was that made it clear—there was no one else he’d rather do life with.

Over time, they built a bond over shared hobbies like winterguard, playing video games, and their mutual love of food. When it came time to propose, Matthew knew he had to make it meaningful. He recreated the night he asked Destiny to be his girlfriend—same van, same food, same spot. After dinner, he told her he had a “gift” for her outside the car. Nervously, she followed him around the van where he gave a short speech before asking her to marry him. She said yes—and they spent the rest of the evening celebrating with their families.

Their relationship is best described as supportive, loving, and loyal—with just the right amount of sarcasm and inside jokes. As Destiny puts it, Matthew’s random glances always make her smile, and as Matthew says, Destiny’s laugh is completely infectious. Together, they’ve grown up, grown closer, and are ready for what’s next—hand in hand, with love, laughter, and lots of snacks.

And if you ask them what sums it all up?
“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird. Let’s fly away together.”
